The Parliamentary Principality of Primus

The Parliamentary Principality of Primus claims to be the first human government established on Ruknaset.

While the above is technically untrue, the actual first government hastily established by the original human arrivals lasted less than a day from the final draft of their first legal code to the first Earthchild attack. The attack crippled the government and drove the survivors away from the first settlement. A man named Quercus, blessed with a talent for leadership and military command, was able to rally those survivors. They established a new settlement within a large crater, using the rim as a wall to help repel attacks. With his strong command and quick thinking, those around him soon began to think of Quercus as a king, and at the end of the first year, he was crowned King of Primus.

Quercus reigned as king until his death. Upon the passing of the crown to his son, Prince Salix, the prince refused to take the title of king, stating that only his father was worthy of that title. Primus remained an absolute principality for two centuries, but the Archipelago War and the resulting Schism caused a serious reconsideration of the structure of government. Powers were stripped away from the reigning Prince Hippomane and were invested into a generally-elected parliament. They were given the ability to pass laws independently of the Prince and to veto his decrees. Though still a notable figure in Primus government, the Prince has been significantly reduced in power.

Primus has poor relations with most other human nations, and poorer relations with the Natives still. The new parliamentary government consistently pursues initiatives to repair these damaged political ties, but foreign nations don't trust that the new government has adequately tempered centuries of hawkish foreign policy. Recent achievements have been made in opening trade up to former hostile nations, so there is a general hope that someday Primus can make right its wrongs.
